Ongoing research projects

ThyVoice

During my tenure as Director of Research in the Executive Committee of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons I initiated a multicentre national study aiming to assess the incidence of voice and swallowing problems after thyroid surgery.

By May 2020 we have recruited over 100 patients out of the target of 500 patients. The results of the study will be shared within the thyroid community through presentation to national meetings.

All patients awaiting thyroid surgery can ask their surgeons if it is possible to join this study.

Survival after surgery adrenocortical cancer

Having accumulated the largest cohort of patients with adrenocortical cancer operated in a single centre in the UK I am not in the process of analysing the data regarding factors that can predict survival and could influence decision for adjuvant treatment

Indocyanine green fluorescence for lymphadenopathy during radical adrenalectomy.

I am investigating mechanisms for improving lymph node yield during lymphadenectomy for adrenocortical cancer. Preliminary data was presented to the 2019 meeting of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons and further work is in progress.

Parathyroid allotransplantation

As long-term plan I am exploring if patients with severe hypoparathyroidism could benefit from a transplant of parathyroid cells. An initial study involving members of the HypoParaUK groups demonstrated the need for an improvement in current treatment strategies and found that majority of such patients will be interested to be involved in a clinical trial. The designs of the study, ethical approvals, funding streams are to be explored in the coming years.
